Compassion: “A sensitivity to the suffering of self and others, with a deep commitment to try to prevent and relieve it”
When working with people who experience mental suffering, we must not only accommodate their suffering, distress and pain – but also the suffering, distress and pain that this work, along with the usual ups and downs of life in general, can bring for us. This work demands a difficult balancing act between sensitivity towards our own and others’ suffering, and the robustness required to help with development and change.
This workshop and retreat will, based on Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT): (Gilbert, 2009, 2014; Gilbert & Irons, 2005) and the integration of Mindful Compassion (e.g. Gilbert & Choden, 2013), focus on development of mindfulness and compassion– in ourselves, for ourselves and in our clients.
It is helpful for participants attending the course to have a basic knowledge of CFT. Although the course will provide attendees with experiences that will deepen their theoretical, experiential and practical skills of CFT that may be transitioned to their clinical work, the primary focus will be on the application of mindful compassion in relation to self-reflection and personal development.
The workshop consists of 5 days’ presentations focusing on CFT and experiential compassionate mind training. In the programme, the emphasis is alternating between theoretical teaching and how these ideas – through experiential practice – can facilitate personal development, growth and wellbeing. There will also be time to relax and enjoy the amazing surroundings found at Evason Resort.
